Game Modifications

Many arcade games have been modified or Many classic arcade games have had different types of modifications performed at some point to alter the game play from its original configuration. The "mod" may be changes to to the basic game programming (different ROM chips) or physical wiring changes made to the PCB board. Some were factory-installed options while others are custom mods, or "hacks", that were developed by independent game techs.

There are several reasons for these mods. Some were attempts to increase game revenues by making the game harder to play. Others were intended to breathe new life into an older game by speeding it up or otherwise giving the game a fresh new feel. In some cases, it was just the temptation to take something well known and add some twists and surprises.

1. Game Difficulty Mod, PCB Solder Lugs Connected:

Midway designed the basic PCB board with an easy modification to increase the difficulty of play by altering when levels are presented. There are two traces on the top side of the board with "lugs" that can be soldered together. They're near the corner of the dipswitch (switch #8) and have a small gap between them as shown below:

Here's a look of a board that had already been modified in this way (and rather sloppily, I might add):

The
If you have a Pac-Man machine with a board like this in it, you have two choices; learn to play it with the different levels or wick off the solder and restore it to its original configuration.

Equivalent Game Levels:

This chart is for a Pac-Man game that has had the lugs soldered together as described above. The column on the left describes each level in order by the "fruit" displayed. The next column shows which pattern from the standard, unmodified game is actually playing and what pattern to use. The third column lets you know if you can expect any ghost "blue time" when Mr. Pac eats an energizer.
